For Optics Designer
Introduction
PanDao works as a cost and risk minimization software.
It adds a new step to the design flow of an optics design. It allows you to check for manufacturability during the design stage. Also, it lets you optimize your designs for smallest fabrication costs. The only thing you need is access to a web browser.
In the following picture, you can see how PanDao integrates in an optics project.
The green lines show the PanDao analysis result. For fabrication, the aspherical lens costs 1.7 more than the spherical one. If material cost are taken into account, the aspherical solution is only 0.85 the price.
With the help of PanDao you are able to decide which is the better solution. This reduces the involvement of other departments. Which saves you a lot of time communicating and arguing.
Example 2: Compare design parameter
Imagine, you would be able to optimize your design for smallest fabrication cost. Now you are able to do it. Change your parameters and ask PanDao about the new fabrication cost.
The following figure shows the output of PanDao for a typical customer question. The input is a standard asphere for imaging. On the right part of the figure, the asphericity of the 220 mm asphere is reduced from 12 um to 8 um.

Create cheaper products
Example 1: Compare designs
Imagine, you generated two competing designs solving the same task. You want to find out which one is cheaper and more stable in fabrication: Ask PanDao!
The following figure shows as example a typical customer situation of two designs. There are two optical systems. The one on the left is all spherical, the other aspherical. Both perform at the same optical quality level of one wave accuracy at the full field position.
This change saves 7.5% fabrication cost, or 11€ per lens.
This cost reduction is almost impossible to predict. Without PanDao you need a lot of experience in optics manufacturing. PanDao shows the impact of parameter variations during the design stage immediately.
Example 3: compare materials
Another example of the impact of a design parameter variation is if the material changes.
The picture below shows the change of glass types of two aspherical lens surfaces. Both doing the same job, with a Strehl number of 0.8. One has low-refractive index, is strongly curved and made out of N-BK7. The other has a high refractive index, is less curved and made out of N-SF57.
PanDao indicates a fabrication cost difference of 5€ or 16%. Although the material is more expensive the overall cost is less.
Without PanDao this would be hard to determine during the design stage. If this is spotted early on in the design stage, not only the final product will be cheaper also a lot of development time is saved.
Design for manufacturability
Example: Check for needed technologies
Imagine you only have a limited access to fabrication technologies and you have to find out if your design can be fabricated with these.
The following figure shows the output of PanDao for a convex aspherical lens with high accuracy.
Answer with access to IBF
PanDao shows that ion beam polishing (IBF) is the only possible technology for this lens.
Without PanDao there would be the chance to notice this only late in the project phase. This would create huge costs and delays in the project.
